Accelerating Innovation in Rail (AiiR5)

The UK Rail industry seeks innovative solutions to improve capacity, punctuality and reliability.

Innovate UK is managing the Fifth ‘Accelerating Innovation in Rail’ (AIiR5) competition on behalf of the Department for Transport (DfT).

The AIiR5 call opens on 18 September and businesses will be able to apply for a share of £7.9 million of funding to accelerate innovation in the UK rail sector.

Are you developing technologies and services that could be used by the UK’s rail industry to ensure “Minimal disruption to rail services”?

These could be in

  • real time asset monitoring using smart, built in sensors, satellite or novel technologies, especially to detect potential degradation and failure
  • data-sharing that supports whole system asset management
  • the provision of better ways to monitor and visualize the location and status of infrastructure and rolling stock

The potential to develop and deploy “Intelligent trains” grows ever nearer due to recent advances in computational power, communications, automation and sensing; this will make the network more reliable and cost effective.

If you have or are developing applications or services which can improve the rail industry’s capability in these two topic areas, you could be eligible for funding in the upcoming Accelerating Innovation in Rail 5 competition call.

Details about the competition scope and application process are now available on the Innovate UK website
